REDEFINING MASCULINITY

What does it take to be a man?

HUBBUBLE IS THE HUB FOR MEN’S
WELL-BEING

From social and physical wellbeing to mental wellbeing, each is an important aspect of a man’s life. At Hubbuble, we bring attention to all these aspects and provide opportunities to practice wellness in each one.

THE WELLNESS TRIANGLE

Typically, three aspects of our health contribute to our overall wellness. Ideally, they should all be in balance to achieve harmony. An imbalance in one aspect can often lead to spillover effects in the others.

However, more often than not, men tend to overlook one specific aspect of their health.

MEN’S MENTAL WELLNESS

MEN SHOULD NOT SHOW EMOTIONS

Growing up, many of us were influenced by culture, upbringing, films, and TV shows to believe that women are the emotional ones in a relationship, while men should be strong, stoic, and objective.

As a result, men often bottle up their negative emotions until they can no longer contain them, which can manifest dangerously through violence, aggression, depression, or even suicide.”

TRANSFORMING HARMFUL MASCULINITY INTO HEALTHY MASCULINITY

WHAT IS HARMFUL MASCULINITY?

Harmful masculinity is a set of harmful ideas about how men should act. These ideas, often influenced by culture, upbringing, or media, define “real” masculinity in an unhealthy manner.

For instance, these norms may pressure men to hide their feelings, suggesting that “real men” don’t show emotions. They might also encourage dominance and control, which is more common in some cultures.

When men are faced with challenges, like financial problems, toxic masculinity can lead to unhealthy ways of coping with emotions. This could result in outward behaviors like aggression or violence, or internal struggles such as depression and suicidal thoughts.

HEALTHY MASCULINITY

Healthy masculinity, on the other hand, challenges traditional gender norms. It encourages men to talk about their feelings, ask for help when needed, and treat everyone with respect and fairness.

The benefits of healthy masculinity are many. Externally, it helps create respectful and fair relationships, reduces aggression and domestic violence, and builds a more supportive and inclusive society.

Internally, it helps men handle stress in healthier ways, promotes open communication, and encourages seeking emotional support. This leads to better relationships, improved mental well-being, lower risk of depression, and greater life satisfaction.
